Bowen, Rod

Rod Bowen has been a cornerstone of the San Diego water polo community for over 30 years. With a coaching career spanning more than three decades, as head coach at Santana High School Bowen has built a legacy defined by dedication, mentorship, and success. As head coach of the San Diego Shores 16U boys team, Bowen leads one of the region’s top youth programs, recognized as one of the best in the country.

Bowen’s passion for water polo extends beyond wins and accolades. His philosophy emphasizes commitment, teamwork, and continuous growth. “Always bring your best effort, stay committed to improving every day, and embrace the journey as much as the victories,” Bowen advises his players.

For Bowen, water polo is deeply personal. His sons, Eric and Alex, both excelled in the sport, with Eric attending Princeton University and Alex attending Stanford University. Alex further distinguished himself by representing the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics and earning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a member of the U.S. men’s national team.

Bowen’s impact on the sport and his athletes has been widely recognized, including receiving the High School Sports Association of San Diego’s all-star service award. His decades of dedication to education-based athletics continue to inspire the next generation of water polo athletes and foster a love for the sport that goes beyond the pool.
