San Diego Shores Water Polo Club recently celebrated its thirtieth year of developing exceptional athletes in San Diego. Founded in 1992 by Coach Doug Peabody, the Shores legacy includes thousands of high school water polo players, more than 250 collegiate athletes, and six olympians.

Leading Shores from day one, Coach Doug has been involved in San Diego water polo for almost fifty years—he found the sport as an eleven-year-old and never looked back. Coach Doug grew up playing for Coach Richard Draz, who is now a USA Water Polo Hall of Fame Coach. Coach Doug has trained in Sweden, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, and represented the USA in the 1989 Maccabiah games in Israel.

In 1992 Coach Doug recognized that there wasn’t a club water polo program that was open to players from different high schools around San Diego. He wanted to create an environment where young athletes could develop and grow as water polo players all year round, and San Diego Shores was born.

In 1993, the first team of Shores athletes went to compete on the National stage: a group of 13U boys traveled to Chicago for the Speedo Cup (now Champions Cup). The boys brought home the bronze medal, and Shores grew from there. Now Shores teams have earned more than 150 medals in National Championship Tournaments.

Over the years Coach Doug has shared his passion for the game with thousands of athletes at all levels, including the Men’s National Cadet Team (2002-2003), the USA Men’s Senior National Team (2003), the USA Maccabiah Teams (2013), and the USA Men’s National Junior Team (2004-2009). He has also been the Boys and Girls Head Water Polo Coach at The Bishop’s School since 1997, where he has led the Knights to 45 CIF Championship games and won 29 titles. In 2024, Coach Doug was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Coach Doug’s advice for young athletes:
“You have to find something you love, and if water polo is something you love the only way to get good at it is to work work work work work.”
